Wifi Options For Mag 254

I have performed a lot of tests and lan is best. I use a alpha r36 router with USB antenna to boost range. You can connect into lan port
too. It uses rtl8187l usb any transceiver with this chip set will work up to 15 ft. do not use a extension cable. get adapter with wire 15 ft. I use outdoor antennas and indoor. I was just in a RV park and the above worked really good. I have a vertical antenna mounted on top of trailer connected to adapter inside. Keep coax short if you go this way. I have 2 r36 routers. One is for home use.

Dwa 160 wireless manager is not compatible with windows 8, so there's no way of saving your wireless information on to it. So I would not recommend this unit if running Windows 7 or above.
I beg to differ.
I am running a D-LINK DWA-160 Xtreme N Dual Band USB Adapter on my mag 254.
I am running Win 10.
That adapter not only works on my mag but also my computers.
Don't need the wireless manager all you have to do is plug it into a pc, go to router and push the button on the router to find the D-LINK adapter.
Works very well on a 5GHz on my mag 254 anywhere i put it in my house.

The RV park I go to has a weak wifi signal and I get a lot of freezing I will have to try the Alfa AWUS036NH/r36 combo. Which outdoor antenna would you recommend for a RV?

Hi Captainkangaroo
I have a mag 254, and bought a wireless adaptor. Is there any instructions posted on how to set it up or do I just plug into the mag 254.
Any help appreciated .... Thanks Nadman

I'm using the Dlink 160 with my Shaw internet but it's freezing a lot - we have two laptops, an ipad and two phones on wifi.

Will an ethernet cable solve this problem?

My Shaw modem is the Touchstone SBG6782

Very frustrating but I'm sure there is a solution

Thanks for any help

If it helps anyone, I bought a cheap generic dual band USB wifi adapter from Ebay and it's working fine with my Mag 254 box. The product description said it used the Ralink RT5572N chipset and supported Linux, so I expect any USB wifi adapters which use that chipset will work fine.

Although that I am still waiting to receive my MAG254, I try to be prepared, and I am trying to collect info for setting up the Wi-Fi adapter (I have one setting aside with no use), and people talking about the OS running their computer, so what that has to do with the Wi-Fi adapter set up if we can directly stick it in the MAG254 USB port, then do the set up from the menu?

Thanks for the help in advance,

Yes, you set it up from the menu. It's nothing to do with the OS running on your computer, it's that the MAG box runs Linux, so whatever wifi adapter you buy needs to support Linux. It doesn't matter what brand or price, as long as it uses one of the chipsets listed in the link in the first post, then it'll be fine.

My 254 is not seeing available wifi networks when I hit the refresh button. Is there something I have forgotten. I'm in the Philippines on vacation and I have public and private wifi here and using it on all my other devices. Thanks for any help.

Will my MAG 254 work with D-Link DWA-172 wireless adapter? I have plugged in the dongle in both usb ports but it always says device status DOWN. Am I doing something wrong or this adapter is not compatible?

Do you still recommend your usb dongle with Ratlink 5572N as I need to buy one for MAG254?
Please reply Thanks

I personally am using a Dlink DWA 160 for over a year and works great. It has both 2.4 and 5.0 GHZ. Why is it better? Most Electronics in the house use 2.4 GHZ which may cause interference with the reception of the router so its better to run on 5.0 where it would be clear of any disconnects or interferences. Your router must support both 2.4 and 5.0 GHZ.

HOW did you get this to work ? I plug mine in and nothing happens
