As I understand it, it basically resets all security identifiers, so if there is an issue with loading into the portal this will be the quickest way to a solution instead of removing the MAC all together.
Another thing is for those who want to use their donation on multiple devices by using the same MAC, It will help with that. You can only use your Donation/MAC on 1 device at a time if you are going that route otherwise you could be banned.
