How can I update my Kodi without uninstalling previous version? Is it possible to just move to the a new version of kodi with all your addons in tact? Thanks for any help.

what system are you running Kodi/XBMC on ? (is it PC, STB, or ... ?)
Is it a Kodi version, like Helix? Or is it the XBMC Gotham version?
If you are not running on the PC, I'd use your PC to test this stuff with.
Install old XBMC Gotham version on PC, add a few add-ons and then try installing the newer Kodi Helix version.
Have a look at addy coded below.
It'll show you all the XBMC versions and the Kodi versions (or updates on same version).
