we have a section in the staff lounge dedicated for spammers only. There is where we record IPs of spammers and keep track of what type of spam is taking place and other things.
Most spammers use a VPN service, so banning IPs really is not the answer. We tried that but then we get emails from regular members asking why such and such IP was banned. They think they did something wrong, which they did not but since the VPN randomly came up with a previously banned IP, well ...
So you can see why we do not like to ban IPs
There is another thing we can do and that is to not allow any new registeries until they are screened. That keeps the spammers out at about 90% efficiency.
Problem with that is that it takes up all my free time of the day, and I mean all of my free time. I have done that maybe on 4 occasions, only when a particular spamming group may be online and are presistant buggers.
But I do miss some people that are not spammers and that have been trying to sign on, well I do not miss them but I may not get to them for a few hours, which sux when you are the one trying to sign in
But like I say, that option is not ideal
Another option is to add 3rd party options to the vbullintin (which the website runs off of), them options can stop spammers at a pretty good efficiency rate.... but to mess with tinies vbullintin is akin to messing with his girlfreinds... you just do not do it
So our front lines are the staff here at iptvTalk.
